Its original site is the former British consulate which was built in the late 19th century and was one of the earliest consulates along the Yangtze River.
The new site of the Zhenjiang Museum was designed in 2002 and completed in 2004. It's a national AAAA grade scenic spot now, covering an area of 20,000 square meters.
The museum stores up over 30,000 cultural relics from the Stone Age to the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911) as well as over 100,000 ancient books.
Among them, the most notable ones are Bronze from the Western Zhou Dynasty (c. 11th century-771 BC), porcelain from six dynasties, gold and silver from the Tang Dynasty (618-907), silk clothing from the Song Dynasty (960-1279), and paintings and calligraphy from the Ming and Qing dynasties.
It now has six exhibitions: Bronze Wares, Pottery and Porcelain, Gold and Silver Wares, Masterpieces of Ancient Crafts, Paintings and Calligraphy of Jingjiang School, and Buddhist Treasures. They represent the most precious part of the history and culture of Zhenjiang.
